Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon Steak
BY: ANDREA ALDEN
These Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon Steaks are an easy to make yet fancy dish. I prepared it for the first time in August 2015, for the housewarming party of our house. We didn't have a working refrigerator and were literally living out of a cooler. We used the TravelQ™ for cooking. At the time, I felt like my life and the new house were being held together with duct tape, much like filets mignon. With this little anecdote I just wanted to show you that with just a few ingredients and little time you can conjure up an unusual meal that everyone will enjoy. Bacon-wrapped filet mignon is a success for everyone, every time. The fillet remains tender even if it is left on the grill a little too long - but I recommend grilling a steak only to medium rare, never beyond. If it's a hot day, you can serve these steaks with a light, refreshing salad. Otherwise with hearty grilled vegetables and baked potatoes.
Did you know - Filte Mignon?
Translated from English-Filet Mignon is a piece of meat taken from the smaller end of the tenderloin or psoas major of a cow. In French it mainly refers to pieces of pork tenderloin.
INGREDIENTS
- 4 filet mignon steaks
- 4 slices of thick smoked bacon
- 4 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 pinch of your favorite steak seasoning to taste
PREPARATION
- Preheat the grill to the highest level, approx. 260 °C, by lighting 2 burners.
- Season fillets with your favorite seasoning. Spread each strip of bacon with 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard. Wrap strips of bacon around the fillets and secure with a toothpick.
- Fry the wrapped fillets for 1 to 2 minutes and then turn them 45° with grill tongs. Grill fillets for another 1 minute. Then turn the meat over and repeat the process for the other side.
- Once the fillets are finished cooking, turn the grill to medium and place the meat on the exposed area of the grill. Grill for another 5 to 7 minutes over indirect heat or until the finger test (hold your middle finger and thumb together and press on the ball of your thumb) indicates that the fillets have reached medium doneness.
- Remove the steaks from the grill and let them rest under foil for 5 to 10 minutes. Then serve with your favorite grilled side dishes.
The most cost-effective option for filet mignon is to buy a piece of beef tenderloin when it's on sale. You can then cut this yourself. One beef fillet is enough for one or two roasts and several steaks. If beef tenderloin isn't currently on sale and you're craving these filet mignon steaks, just go to your butcher. He will certainly be happy to cut the fillets to the thickness you require. What will you serve with the bacon-wrapped fillets?
